Coach Surdyka joined the Pinnacle wrestling staff in 2023 as the Head Varsity Assistant Coach and in 2025, he became the Head Coach for Pinnacle. Zack coached from 2019 - 2023 at Scottsdale's Chaparral High School and led the program as the Head Coach from 2021 - 2023. He has been apart of the NVRTC wrestling club coaching staff since 2022 and has assisted in coaching at Mountain Trail Middle School since 2024.
Coach Surdyka was mentored in wrestling by his father, a State Champion coach at San Pasqual High School. As a competitor, he was a four time state placer and State Runner-Up while wrestling in high school here in Arizona. He later began training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), eventually turning Pro and fighting for multiple promotions, including Bellator-MMA.
Coach Surdyka is supported by his wife, Chelsea, and their two children, Mason, Zion and Kiara.
Coach Fawcett joined the Pinnacle wrestling staff in 2021. With prior coaching experience, as an assistant coach at Barry Goldwater high school, he brings another unique set of skills to the coaching staff.
Coach Fawcett was a State Champion for Phoenix’s Barry Goldwater High School. He wrestled collegiately for Embry Riddle University and later transferred to wrestle at Arizona State University.
Coach Fawcett is supported by his wife, Kelly, and their three children, Carter, Andrew and Emma.
Coach Hewlett joined the Pinnacle wrestling staff in 2024. For seven years before 2024, he was the Head Assistant Coach at Phoenix's Washington High School. He brings a very established resume of developing young wrestlers. He also joins his oldest son, Louden, on the coaching staff.
Coach Hewlett is supported by his wife, Jessica, and their two sons Max and Vonn.
Coach Hewlett joined the Pinnacle wrestling staff in 2022. A former Pinnacle wrestler himself, he brings an amazing passion to our coaching staff, while also mentoring his brother, current Pioneer wrestler, Max Hewlett.
Coach Tom Capaldi enters his seventh year with the Pinnacle Pioneers wrestling program, bringing nearly a decade of coaching experience at the high school level. Prior to joining Pinnacle, he spent three years as an assistant coach at Deer Valley High School, where he helped guide athletes to success at the sectional and state levels. Over the years, Coach Capaldi has mentored numerous state champions, placers, and section champions, and he considers coaching his own sons and stepdaughter among his proudest experiences in the sport.
In 2025, Coach Capaldi accepted the honor of leading Pinnacle’s women’s wrestling program as Head Coach. His vision is to provide a supportive and competitive environment where young women can thrive, gain confidence, and carry the lessons of wrestling into all areas of life. He believes in developing the whole athlete, on and off the mat, and in building a program rooted in discipline, resilience, and unity.
As a competitor, Coach Capaldi is a former high school region champion, a 20-year Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, and an active competitive powerlifter. Beyond athletics, he devotes his energy to philanthropy programs serving underprivileged children, extending his commitment to mentorship and personal growth to the wider community.
